چکیده
Linguistic research has revealed several pathways of language change that may guide our understanding the evolution mental‐state attribution. In particular, it turns out that, in many languages, quotative verbs have been exapted for attributing a variety mental states, including beliefs and intentions. such literal translation of, “Betty said: ‘There will be war’”, used not only to quote Betty's words, but also convey she thought or intended there war. This paper presents model pragmatic shifts underlying this pathway, proposes an evolutionary trajectory from quotation public practice intentions, thence implicit belief/intention

‘Folk psychology’ is not folk psychology
This paper disputes the claim that our understanding of others is enabled by a commonsense or ‘folk’ psychology, whose ‘core’ involves the attribution of intentional states in order to predict and explain behaviour. I argue that interpersonal understanding is seldom, if ever, a matter of two people assigning intentional states to each other but emerges out of a context of interaction between th...
متن کاملFolk Psychology
For the last 25 years discussions and debates about commonsense psychology (or “folk psychology,” as it is often called) have been center stage in the philosophy of mind. My strategy involves arguing both aga...
